I’m not great at keeping my mouth shut, I’m always telling people about things I think I know about. I now look back at my layette list and have comments to share. Since I currently have three pregnant friends, I’ll spare you personal (read: annoying) phone calls and post my opinions here.

Recovery
Tucks Pads to start, you’ll want these around after a vaginal birth as well as a Sitz Bath and probably a removable shower-head to ease self cleaning. Make sure to take the stool softener (all natural, non prescription) the Doctor gives you since they do that for a reason! Ooh, and a blow-up donut shaped thing to sit on after, I was glad to have mine.
Lanilosh Sticks
Um, be nice to the nipples, they make milk!
Disposable or Reusable Breast Pads
Um, you will leak. I leaked through the reusable, needed the plastic on the back of the disposables. There are also these things called Lily Pads, which are very cool and you might want to give a try. Google it.
Nipple Shield
Medela makes a “Contact Nipple Shield” for those of us with small nipples and those who end up with sore or cracked nipples. Lets just say I’ve never had the sore/cracked problem, been engorged or uncomfortable AND even though Papaya has had thrush twice, my boobs are clear. I love this thing. It would be nice to be able to nurse without it, but Papaya is addicted and if it keeps her nursing than so be it.
Waterproof Fabric cut into Rectangles
I use these to line the diaper changing pad so I don’t have to launder the cover for every little drop-o-stuff. I have about six at this spot, throw one into the dirty laundry and replace when needed. Each night I have one under Papaya so that when we lay on our sides nursing and she falls asleep it catches the milk drips. This keeps from having stale milk mattress, a good thing. I buy it by the yard at my local fabric store, I buy white but they have annoying baby prints too. You can also use these to line cribs so you don’t have to change a whole crib bedding (assuming your muchkin has a crib, ours does but all it does is hold laundry) in the middle of the night. This fabric gets quite soft after the first washing.
Nursing Bras
I love the pull-aside “sleeping” kind for most of the time as the underwire gets annoying.
Baby Care Kit
It comes with the boogie sucker, medicine dropper and tiny little nail clippers as well as a nice brush for the fuzz your baby will be born with. If your child is born with a head of hair, you’ll have to ask someone else, as Papaya was not.
Absorbent bibs (4-8)
I liked these, put them over outfits when I was nursing her as a catch for extra milk. I used them MORE from about 3 months on when the teething drool began.
Booties or socks (3-6 pairs)
Socks. No need for booties unless you feel the need to match an outfit. Then again, maybe booties are harder to kick off, so if your baby is into kicking off socks, one pair-o-booties.
Blanket sleepers (1-2, if cold climate)
I LOVED these for Papaya. It is like a tank top on the top, zipper up the front (starts at top ends at bottom – genius!) and a sleeping bag at the bottom. Great for a cosleeping baby so you don’t have to use blankets which area SIDS-related no-no.
Gowns or stretchies (5-7)
Papaya kicked out of these or got her feet stuck. Some people love ‘em for easy diaper changing. I found they just upset her. I might buy one pack in case they work for you.
Hats (2-4)
The hat from the hospital worked well, and the ones I bought with ear flaps and Velcro under the chin. I loved hats – had 4+ and did not regret them!
One-piece, footed rompers or tops and pants (5-7)
OMG we LOVED these footed rompers or sleepers. So easy, she lived in them for the first few months and was darn happy about it.
Bodysuits or undershirts with snaps at the legs (6-8)
Onsies are great – I had a few short sleeved ones for layering since most of the rompers we had were long sleeved.
T-shirts or kimonos (3-4)
A few Tshirts to go with a diaper when cooling off from fever or just chillin’
Receiving blankets (4-6)
The light ones from Target, etc. were great for swaddling, but it took two. We used them as burp cloths and to layer over Papaya in the carseat. They are also great for putting on the floor before laying baby down for tummy time.
Snowsuit or bunting and warm hat (for winter babies)
We had one snowsuit. We used it to/from the hospital and Doctors offices in the first month. Beautiful Gift, but I’m not sure if I would have spent $ on it.
Bath
The Baby Bath…useful for the first few months and good for nervous parents holding wet squiggly baby.
Burp Cloths
Chinese PreFold Diapers. Used them all over, still do at one year. I’d have at least a dozen for starters.
Slings
I believe each new parent needs, not a Baby Bijorn, but a Wrap. A Moby Wrap, stretchy and comfortable and great for keeping your baby close to your heart.
Then, after you become addicted you can move on to European Wraps such as Didymos and Easycare and…
Bumbo
From about the time babies start to sit up, holding their heads but not big on balance yet, we LOVED Papaya’s “Bumbo Baby Sitter” for restaurants, etc. At one year old her best friend still uses hers for her “bathroom chair” where she sits and brushes her teeth.
In my opinion….
Have a “babymoon” and spend a few days with only you, your husband and baby! Recover carefully and treat yourself with love too. Enjoy each moment you can, rest in the others. Wear your baby in a sling, have a date with your husband! Trust your instinct, it will come out! Sign with your baby from early on, they sign back sooner than you think! Make your own babyfood, it is easy and cheap. As everyone tells you…it goes by fast and you will look back glad for every moment of housecleaning you put off to smell your baby’s hair.
