Baby Advice

I’m not great at keeping my mouth shut, I’m always telling people about things I think I know about.  I now look back at my layette list and have comments to share.  Since I currently have three pregnant friends, I’ll spare you personal (read: annoying) phone calls and post my opinions here.

Layette:

Recovery
Tucks Pads to start, you’ll want these around after a vaginal birth as well as a Sitz Bath and probably a removable shower-head to ease self cleaning.  Make sure to take the stool softener (all natural, non prescription) the Doctor gives you since they do that for a reason!  Ooh, and a blow-up donut shaped thing to sit on after, I was glad to have mine.

Lanilosh Sticks

Um, be nice to the nipples, they make milk!

Disposable or Reusable Breast Pads
Um, you will leak.  I leaked through the reusable, needed the plastic on the back of the disposables.  There are also these things called Lily Pads, which are very cool and you might want to give a try.  Google it.

Nipple Shield

Medela makes a “Contact Nipple Shield” for those of us with small nipples and those who end up with sore or cracked nipples.  Lets just say I’ve never had the sore/cracked problem, been engorged or uncomfortable AND even though Papaya has had thrush twice, my boobs are clear.  I love this thing.  It would be nice to be able to nurse without it, but Papaya is addicted and if it keeps her nursing than so be it.

Waterproof Fabric cut into Rectangles

I use these to line the diaper changing pad so I don’t have to launder the cover for every little drop-o-stuff.  I have about six at this spot, throw one into the dirty laundry and replace when needed.  Each night I have one under Papaya so that when we lay on our sides nursing and she falls asleep it catches the milk drips.  This keeps from having stale milk mattress, a good thing.  I buy it by the yard at my local fabric store, I buy white but they have annoying baby prints too.  You can also use these to line cribs so you don’t have to change a whole crib bedding (assuming your muchkin has a crib, ours does but all it does is hold laundry) in the middle of the night.  This fabric gets quite soft after the first washing.

Nursing Bras

I love the pull-aside “sleeping” kind for most of the time as the underwire gets annoying.

Baby Care Kit
It comes with the boogie sucker, medicine dropper and tiny little nail clippers as well as a nice brush for the fuzz your baby will be born with.  If your child is born with a head of hair, you’ll have to ask someone else, as Papaya was not.

Absorbent bibs (4-8)

I liked these, put them over outfits when I was nursing her as a catch for extra milk.  I used them MORE from about 3 months on when the teething drool began.

Booties or socks (3-6 pairs)
Socks.  No need for booties unless you feel the need to match an outfit.  Then again, maybe booties are harder to kick off, so if your baby is into kicking off socks, one pair-o-booties.

Blanket sleepers (1-2, if cold climate)

I LOVED these for Papaya.  It is like a tank top on the top, zipper up the front (starts at top ends at bottom – genius!) and a sleeping bag at the bottom.  Great for a cosleeping baby so you don’t have to use blankets which area  SIDS-related no-no.

Gowns or stretchies (5-7)

Papaya kicked out of these or got her feet stuck.  Some people love ‘em for easy diaper changing.  I found they just upset her.  I might buy one pack in case they work for you.

Hats (2-4)

The hat from the hospital worked well, and the ones I bought with ear flaps and Velcro under the chin.  I loved hats – had 4+ and did not regret them!

One-piece, footed rompers or tops and pants (5-7)

OMG we LOVED these footed rompers or sleepers.  So easy, she lived in them for the first few months and was darn happy about it.

Bodysuits or undershirts with snaps at the legs (6-8)

Onsies are great – I had a few short sleeved ones for layering since most of the rompers we had were long sleeved.

T-shirts or kimonos (3-4)

A few Tshirts to go with a diaper when cooling off from fever or just chillin’

Receiving blankets (4-6)

The light ones from Target, etc. were great for swaddling, but it took two.  We used them as burp cloths and to layer over Papaya in the carseat.  They are also great for putting on the floor before laying baby down for tummy time.

Snowsuit or bunting and warm hat (for winter babies)

We had one snowsuit.  We used it to/from the hospital and Doctors offices in the first month.  Beautiful Gift, but I’m not sure if I would have spent $ on it.

Bath

The Baby Bath…useful for the first few months and good for nervous parents holding wet squiggly baby.

Burp Cloths

Chinese PreFold Diapers.  Used them all over, still do at one year.  I’d have at least a dozen for starters.

Slings

I believe each new parent needs, not a Baby Bijorn, but a Wrap.  A Moby Wrap, stretchy and comfortable and great for keeping your baby close to your heart.
Tied for second are a Pocket Sling (www.hotslings.com) and a Mei Tai (www.kozycarrier.com)
All you will want to know is at www.thebabywearer.com
Then, after you become addicted you can move on to European Wraps such as Didymos and Easycare and…

Bumbo

From about the time babies start to sit up, holding their heads but not big on balance yet, we LOVED Papaya’s “Bumbo Baby Sitter” for restaurants, etc.  At one year old her best friend still uses hers for her “bathroom chair” where she sits and brushes her teeth.

In my opinion….

Have a “babymoon” and spend a few days with only you, your husband and baby!  Recover carefully and treat yourself with love too.  Enjoy each moment you can, rest in the others.  Wear your baby in a sling, have a date with your husband!  Trust your instinct, it will come out!  Sign with your baby from early on, they sign back sooner than you think!  Make your own babyfood, it is easy and cheap.  As everyone tells you…it goes by fast and you will look back glad for every moment of housecleaning you put off to smell your baby’s hair.

Who let the dogs out?

Papaya reached out and touched Peter (my Dog) today! This is a breakthrough as she has, until now, been afraid of dogs. I’d like to thank Tutu and Bumpa who played outside with her near the dog today, and Peter for being such a great dog.

In other news I went crazy on gift bags for the kids coming to Papaya’s Birthday party - probably spent $18 per kid! Then I ordered her Guava Chiffon Cake with Purple Orchids for the party….yum! Now all I have left is to send out directions to the people who have RSVP’d since the street in front of my parent’s home is now a one-way due to construction.

Leavin’ on a jet plane…

It was awful. What you ask? BOTH driving home from the airport after dropping off Makenzie and Julie (Papaya woke up from her nap and cried) and then the whole 5 1/2 hour flight the next day.
The night before our flight, Papaya had a playdate. At least that is what she thought of her two hours being babysat by my friend Amy and her daughter Gracie. Papaya was enthralled by Gracie and only cried at the very end during the indignity of having her diaper changed. Adventure Dad and I had a date, Outback Steakhouse, and it was wonderful. We sat in a booth in the bar, because we could, and enjoyed talking mostly about things other than Papaya. At the end of the night all three of us cuddled into bed for our last night together in a few months. It was sweet, a big cuddle for us all, then before we knew it 3 a.m. came and Adventure Dad was off to work. We’ll see him in a few months, but I wil sure miss him and I think Papaya will too.
That morning Papaya and I awoke at seven and made it to the gym by eight. She played in daycare while I worked out with Chris, the trainer that Julie and I go to together. I think he enjoyed going even tougher on me without Julie there, he did the same for her once when I missed a meeting. After a shower wer were homeward bound. We took a morning nap and then Darcy arrived to take us to the airport.
We stopped in Tacoma for lunch at Chevy’s and Papaya enjoyed her beans and cheese. When we arrived and checked in I found we had great seats, lucky of course. We got into the terminal just fine then found a play zone! Papaya crawled over the clean carpet and rubber toys, played peek-a-boo with an 18 month old girl who was also there. There were changing tables and everything! I bought a meal for the plane at Dish D’lish (Grilled Panini with Chicken, Brie and Chutney) as well as Chips and a bottle of water. A man who worked there complimented my Hotsling saying that in Africa, where he was from, all women carried their babies this way. He said all the American babies seem to have so many buckles on their carriers that they seem uncomfortable. A babywearing compliment!!!!!!!
At the gate, we were offered a First Class Upgrade…and took it of course! I had Row 1 Seats C&D. For the first hour it was great, I sat in front of my seat and Papaya had the area in front of hers. She worked on the magazine rack and played with her drumstick. The stewardess seemed unhappy to have a baby in first class, but I did not care. Then, Papaya nursed and tried to fall asleep. She cried and cried, could not fall asleep. Two hours later, thats right TWO HOURS, she gave in. She slept for the end of the flight and as we loaded off I jokingly thanked the other passengers for not throwing us off the plane at 30,000 feet. I said nothing to the mean stewardess, Melony.
Papaya was happy once she woke, on the drive home and even as we went to bed. She slept from midnight to eight a.m. and we both woke up to a new day.
Last night we had a family party where she met more relatives then she knew what to do with. It was wonderful and fun, and the food was great. She is walking, up to ten steps at a time, so this trip should e full of adventure!

She’s walking

Papaya is walking these days, she’s up to four steps as a time! We spent the day with many different friends; breakfast with Patty & Ryan Beal and Michele, Patrick & Clare Gunther. A great nap followed, then lunch with Tessa, Niko & Sasha as well as Julie & Makenzie Poplawski. She took a great afternoon nap, ate a huge dinner and was happy to see her father even though he got home very late - 8 p.m. Ah, refit. He works long days, and nights for that matter, and is stressed. He’s so cuddly with Papaya these days, knowing he’ll be saying goodbye to her in just a few short days. I pray that she’ll recognize him when he gets home.

In less fun news, my brother will be unable to come to Papaya’s first Birthday Luau. He has to be in California for a Surf Conference related to his career since he worked for Clark Foam which recently went out of business. I understand that he must go, it is his only chance to meet with the people that make his career. At the same time, I’m sad. I’d never want him to stay when it could be so harmful to his career, but he will be so very missed. I love my brother. He’s the type of guy I’d be friends with even if he were not my brother.

Tomorrow Papaya and I are taking Julie and Makenzie to the airport tomorrow…

Birds

Papaya and I had a conversation about the birds this morning. No, I’m not crazy, I’m a signing Mama! She pointed out the window and we did the signs for bird, mama bird, dad bird, baby bird and music together. She sat on my lap, looking out the window over my shoulder with such joy. She would look back for my signs as I said “Mama bird sings (music sign) to baby bird!” even though she could hear me. Of course, I’m convinced she’s a genius.

I must note, that I’m not a Super Signer. I use what I remember of ASL, look up a few that I care about in signing books (bird came from Papaya’s love of her rubber duck and me wanting to sign about it) and do them on and off. She gets eat, milk, more, all done daily, but the other ones come and go when we get a chance. I’ve heard the signing is much better in children who are signed to from about four months on, but honestly I was not feeling very creative at that point. I was worried I’d have to catch up, but once I started it took a few weeks and Papaya learns new signs easily. Now, I just need to remember more so that I can expand her vocabulary and challenge her.

We missed the gym today, that is my nice way of noting that we slept in. Tomorrow is Cycle so we must go for the wonderful calorie burning power of that evil little bike. I’m also attempting to eat less carbs (I’m an addicted and I think that might have something to do with my large rear end) and eat every two hours. Today I ate; lowfat cottage cheese, curried chicken salad, char shu pork and a big green salad with avocado dressing and crab for dinner. Tomorrow is an fruit day in my new eating plan (Julie found it in a magazine, so it MUST be medically sound, right?) so I have Mango, Papaya, Orange, Apple, Banana, Pear, Green and Red Grapes and, um, I think that’s it.

A windy new year

It’s sure windy here in Western Washington, what a way to welcome 2006!

DH and I got up this morning, he made pancakes and waffles. He and Papaya played until I drug my arse out of bed at 10 a.m. We had planned to go snowshoeing up at Hurricane Ridge with the Beal family but the road was closed due to 45+ mph winds!

Instead we drove out to Southcenter Mall in SEATAC to go to the Apple Store and buy some jeans. I’ve been avoiding buying clothing until I loose weight, but honestly, I needed some nice clothes. I bought two pairs of jeans, size numbers I dislike, but honestly I look better in jeans that fit rather than doing the 10 pounds into a 5 pound bag thing.

Tomorrow, Monday, Julie and I are doing a three day diet. Day 1 is all Protien with Vegetables for dinner. I went to the store and got cottage cheese, sliced turkey and munster cheese, and some crab meat. I do protien well. Day two is all fruit, so I got papayas, mangos, and cherries to add to the oranges, apples, and bananas I had here.

Only four days until Hawaii!
