National Cherry Blossom Festival

blowing wind across the basin
crowds aplenty back and forth
rubbing shoulders with them all
men, women, black, white, brown

petals floating down upon us
gushing branches of pink above
“johhny! smile while sitting on this branch!”

choppy water floating petals
ice cream wrappers and soda cups
“no lids or straws allowed here”

honking horns pedestrians gone wild
coundown timers mean nothing
it’s important i join THAT crowd
the one across this street

grass just starting to grow
patchy after a dry winter
stomped to oblivion
dust clouds race across the Mall

line up here, “dont cut!”
soon you can enter the Metro
then queue for the escalator
“step to the back of the platform!”

On the train as the sun sets
missed the fireworks
going home with a sleepy babe
we’ll all sleep long tonight

Early mornings are rough, especially when your Mother who let you stay up late talking to your Daddy comes in and rubs your back at 5:30 a.

Oh, the cherry blossoms! If I thought they’d allow me on an airplane in my condition…

There’s nothing quite like the cherry blossoms in DC.

    And the crowded metro…

Funny how one can get nostalgic over something that was kind of bothersome at the time.
