Unlike many of my friends, I’ve never had my In Laws visit before. I’ve been married for six+ years and we’ve not made that connection. I’m not upset about this as I know they run a Dairy Farm and don’t have a lot of time to travel, and we do go to see them quite a bit. They have even built and addition on to their house for visiting children with their wives and kids! That all changed this week, they visited us in Burke, VA!
Arriving on Thursday afternoon they were tired, but being a mean Daughter In Law I put them right to work. After unloading their suitcases and a house tour Bruce began to put together our newly delivered Dining Room table and eight chairs! Three hours later Papaya had napped, Patti had worked on organizing Papaya’s room, the table and chairs were finished and Adventure Dad got home! We sat down for dinner (crab stuffed salmon, pasta with alfredo pesto, roasted asparagus and a raspberry almond tart for dessert) and soon Caleb (my Brother in Law who lives in Maryland) arrived to join us as well!
Friday was spent with Bruce, Patti, Papaya and I working a bit on the house (a dump run, Papaya’s room organization) and then driving up to Maryland. After a few hours with Caleb we returned to Virginia, just missing rush hour (the only sign of Bruce’s birthday, this luck). We all went out to Chevy’s Fresh Mex (Adventure Dad, Papaya, Patti, Bruce and I in the truck and Caleb and Stacy arriving from Maryland separately). Food, fun, company! It was nice to meet Caleb’s girlfriend who he has known since High School but is only now dating.
Saturday, the In Laws finally got to see a bit more of Adventure Dad! We packed them up and drove separately to Manassas where we had breakfast at my favorite spot, Cracker Barrel. Bruce and Patti both liked the John Deere merchandise and bought quite a few little nicknacks. Then we drove over to the site of the 1st and 2nd Battle of Manassas where we got to walk around the Battle of Bull Run field and see where “Stonewall” Jackson got his name. After this they headed North towards home and we took a short break before the National Cherry Blossom Festival that afternoon.
Meeting up with Donna, Joe and Kevin we took the Orange Line Metro into DC. The crowds were amazing, the mall still a bit dry from the winter but the trees were beautiful. Papaya would not nap in the kozy or stroller so we chose to go home before the fireworks. Our first foray into DC for tourism; a busy day/choice but a nice sight, we think we’ll choose something less advertised for our next foray into the city.
