Neither Rain nor Snow…

nor stupid leadership from a Commander in Chief, oh, wait….Bush stopped the Post Office from making all deliveries on the day of President Ford’s funeral. Don’t get me wrong - I understand respecting the deceased President - but closing the Post Office? WTF?

Like these people who go all out to deliver mail in all sorts of freaking strange circumstances (hurricanes, snow storms) are now held back because W thought it would be a nice thing?

Whatever.

The Firehouse Brewing Company by Papaya Mom on March 7th, 2006
Our first great restaurant on this trip was tonight in Rapid City, South Dakota! The Firehouse Brewing Company was a find thanks to one of those fliers in the lobby of our hotel room that Papaya feels the need to remove from the rack.

Rest in Peace

I’m so sad today as I’ve learned through Adventure Dad of the deaths of two American Submariners who were swept overboard as they attempted to offload a harbor pilot coming out of the UK.

I pray the families were informed before it hit the news. With only 110 men on a Fast Attack Submarine utter panic would ensue in the family group if the news came down without names - it’s too large a chance it COULD be your own husband.

There are so many sad people in Norfolk, VA tonight - and many others of us around the world.

Train Table too?

And to think…Papaya Papaya Princess of Everything does not own a train table, we thought maybe NEXT Christmas it would be neat. Then I took her on a playdate and she spent a lot of time like this:

Ellipse

We took Papaya to the National Mall today, the Ellipse portion, to see the National Christmas Tree.

From Afar

It was a clear cold night in the low 40s, beautiful and not too crowded for a DC monument. The Tree - not as huge as one might expect but very pretty nonetheless. The model trains by local enthusiasts (the highlight of their year Adventure Dad suggested) were really neat at the star of the show in Papaya’s eyes. The 56 smaller trees - very nice but tiny (can you list what 56 trees are for?).

Afterwards a trip to Capital City Brew finished the night nicely. I adore their fresh pretzels and horseradish dip that come before you’ve ordered a thing - I must work on my own recipe one of these days.

What a difference a day (or night) makes.

Flying overnight might be the best idea I have ever had, or the airlines had, whatever.

Papaya fell asleep two hours into the flight, slept for five, woke up and was cheerful for the last hour. We got off the plane, played for two hours in a PlayZone area of the airport, and she slept the whole 75 minutes of the second flight. How awesome is that? Okay, ME sleeping too would have been awesome, but hey - I’d rather be awake without a screaming kid.

We are home, happy, healthy and on a totally whacked out time job. It’s 3:30 a.m. and I’m opening Xmas cards since I napped all afternoon. Papaya is asleep now but waited until 2 a.m. to do so….don’t worry, I sent Dad to bed earlier than that.

So tomorrow - grocery shopping and unpacking - yay!

Hawaii

There are many funny things I’ve noticed durring my trip here:

Christmas Lights on Palm trees…NOT what mainland people expect because we really only decorate the trunks and not the leaves.

Santa at the Mall…even creepier when dressed like that in the heat, I mean adding sweat to the outfit is NOT an improvement.

Military…I know I married one, but geez, could you stick out like more of a sore thumb everywhere? Out to breakfast with your family in matching Aloha wear, um, hello? Are you going for the tourist look without the sunburn?

Papaya seriously LOVES to be naked and playing with animals…so she’ll maybe grow up to be a naked Veteranarian? Um, maybe not.

Love Junkie

I’ve fallen in love many times in my life, for many reasons and in many ways.

Not all, in fact few, romantic…many with just parts of another person, even the idea of what I saw in them rather than the truth of who they were or are.

I fell in love the first time, the kind where you think you might marry and overpopulate the earth with someone, at eighteen. I was young, but not too young, and sat in a truck at Kailua Beach Park listening to a Joan Osborne song about God (What if God were one of us…blah blah blah). I remember thinking that the person I sat next to had the most interesting ideas, I wanted to know every thought that filled that brain and share all of the ones floating through my own. I had my feet on the dashboard and my toenails were painted; proof that my mind saves important facts about the past. This relationship did not work out, although I do wish the person all the very best in life, thank goodness because a year later I met Adventure Dad and the rest is…happy history. But I can’t erase this person from my memory, I often wonder what path life has taken and if it’s treated him well.

My Mom and I talked about it today and agreed, as much as you’d like to erase any love you’ve had for anyone else but your spouse from your emotional memory it’s just not possible. You have to accept it for what it is/was in the context of who you were at that time, smile at the memories and move on.

I still love Adventure Dad the best, followed by Papaya and then…well, the lsit of friends and family is too long to even consider typing. My heart is full and for that I should be very happy.
