Not enough produce?

The Well Fed Network recently had an article on advances in Nutrition and part of it popped out at me:

“If Americans doubled their consumption of produce (which we would have to do in order to eat as much as we should be eating), there would not be enough vegetables to go around. More government funding for fruits and vegetables instead of big row crops like wheat, corn, soy and rice would help the problem.”

After reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma that traces back a huge percentage of our food to corn thanks to the huge subsidies, etc. in it…I’m not too amazed. Sad, but not amazed. I’d love to see Govt. subsidies away from corn and onto a variety of more nutrient-rich food, but is it possible? That lobby that created the corn subsidies is not about to lay back and give up the extra funds.

So my first order of business when I’m magically in charge? Subsidies for more Clementines. Yep, I eat at least two of those yummy sweeties per day.

We’re spending most of our grocery money at the farmer’s market these days. Well, as much of it as we can manage. Local organic vegetables are cheap and delicious.
