That gave me a lot to think about. Thanks for linking it.

I’s always thought it was totally normal for a kid (over 4 years) to get a swift swat on the behind every once in a while, but that article made tons of great points. I’m really thinking of having “a talk” with the hubby about not ever using spanking as a punishment. It just makes more sense not to.

I don’t know, I think spanking is one of those subjects like abortion or politics. It’s very individual and personal.

Funny they say it’s illegal to spank in Germany. I was raised by my german grandmother who barely spoke english. She spanked us rarely. More often she’d pour liquid soap down our throats while she sat on top of us. Maybe that’s the way they prefer to do things. I’d rather have just taken the spanking, personally.

I don’t resort to spanking. In fact, I’ve spanked my 12 year old enough times to count on one hand, the last time being years and years ago. I think it’s unnecessary. It mostly just makes the parent and the child feel horrible and guilty. I believe it does interfere with bonding because, it just FEELS bad afterwards. But I wouldn’t judge another parent for using it for punishment at times. I have a neighbor whose children are so rotten I want to go spank them for the parents. I’m kidding, but we have joked about it with other neighbors.

I’d never assume that I know how to raise or discipline another person’s child. Every child is different. They all respond to discipline in different ways. I think the government is involved enough in our lives, I don’t know if I want them dictating something like that too. I guess if they can keep gays from marrying who they love, they might as well come in my home and tell me how to discipline my kids…

Boy, I suddenly realized that I sure do feel strongly about something I rarely even think about. Thanks for bringing up a subject that made my brain twitch a little! :-)

“she’d pour liquid soap down our throats while she sat on top of us.” OMG that is awful. I see your point.

And it’s true - I should title it reasons not to hit MY child since I am no expert in anyone else’s children - I’m only an ametur at my own beautiful daughter.

The liquid soap only added to my “bubbly personality!” Just kidding! ;-)

I totally regreted posting that afterwards because I think it sounds different than I meant for it to! I think you are right, I’m totally in agreement with you on the spankings issue. I like to play the devil’s advocate with issues; probably not one of my stronger character traits. I blame that on the soap too!

I love dialouge - it did not come off bad to me at all :)
