Dinner Date

It’s not that Adventure Dad and I don’t like each other’s company - it is just that we’ve been married for a while now and sometimes we run out of things to talk about. How many times can we tell each other what a fun kid we had, how well I cook or that one of us better clean that damn bathroom before…..

So sometimes when there are nearby tables at dinner with one of those oh-so-charming people (often college-age women I’ve found) who talk at decibels far too loud for public - we listen. Not only do we listen though, we add our own endings to the sentences and make our own little version of Mad Libs but often with a lot of sarcasm about the intelligence of the person who seems to have been born without volume control.

Tonight we had quite the dichotomy - behind Adventure Dad a couple breaking up right there at the table with comments like “but where am I going to go now?” Very sad and mostly quiet so we kept our low-decibel conversation out of theirs.

But behind me - a humor jackpot. What seemed like possibly a first date with the young woman who we learned was “already” in her Junior year at George Mason (this should be in no way seen as an indictment of this institution of learning - everyone has a few bright stars like this - even Yale).

A few moments that stuck out (and not only because of my vain attempt to keep from spewing out my chips and queso dip out of my nose);

Girl: Like, my Dad like teaches the like soldiers before like they get deployed

Us: to my bedroom.

Girl: I don’t really have a home church here yet, I have not been here longer enough

Us: longer enough to learn English, they don’t like teach that in like my classes until like Senior year, I think.

Girl: So this guy like came all the way up for me to show him around DC…

Us: and my dorm room.

Girl: No way, I would like never like go out with like a guy who like lives so far away, I’d like never see

Us: him naked.

Girl: I really get along with like everyone, but after like two months when I know people I just like know better and I don’t like 95% of them anymore because like they don’t

Us: want to spend all their like time talking about me.

This guy, who was actually sitting closer to us, never spoke - the poor guy was trying to agree with her with what we assumed was the intention to get into her pants (as she admitted to him - shh “don’t tell anyone I told you”) as did the Richmond guy and a few others (because it’s “like…what’s that word? Gossip.”). Dude - we listened to it for the thirty minutes it took us to eat and pay the check - I sure hope that guy got something for his time listening to a shrill diatribe about her all night long.

Well you all now know I’m really a sarcastic and mean person, but not to people’s faces so that makes it a bit better. However, I was working on what to say to them as we left. We considered; “Don’t worry - I won’t blog about this with your names” or (to the guy) “can I get the address of your blog? because I really want to read about this from your perspective” to my favorite “hey, do you have hearing trouble? no? then I suggest you get that checked out since that couple, over there in the far corner, she knows what you did behind the Jefferson Memorial with that guy from Richmond who is not your boyfriend.” Of course because I’m only a Mean Girl in my own sarcastic head and under my breath to my husband (and on my blog) so I walked out without a word feeling slightly less negative about my evening’s entertainment than I ought to.

To Impeach?

Impeach Cheney has been around for a while - as have calls to impeach Reagan, Bush (in 2005), and even soon to be ex-Attorney General Gonzales. It’s not as uncommon as many of us were made to believe when Clinton was acquitted in 1998 along partisan lines. And I totally agree with the excitement of American Mum when she talks of the start of the process regarding Cheney.

Heck - I totally agree that this guy is one of the people entrusted to power in our government who has served not the American people as a whole but rather his own partisan, financially motivated, underhanded agenda and lined his pockets in the meantime. But then it gets so sad for me - because I’ve lost a lot of faith in our government and the idea that the congress (even the new Democratically controlled one) is going to save the American public from the old boy network.

A military wife on my favorite parenting site talked about the way people approach her when her husband is deployed and she’s home with four children. Often, as I can attest to as well, people ask her “what can I do?” Her simple answer often shocks but it rings so very true - “Well for the love of God please don’t vote Republican.”

When it comes to our current Vice President - I just don’t know if the bill introduced into a subcommittee of the Judiciary committee will ever see the light of day. I think the odds of it being scheduled by either committee chair are slim to none, and the Speaker (no matter her good intentions to lead us out of the dark hole this administration has created) would be crazy to stake her career on bringing this bill to the floor that even the committee chairs are afraid to touch as the secretaries file it so very far away.

I think, sadly, that Mr. Cheney will retire into the money he’s aquired through underhanded dealings and contracts and die of old age. It’s not that I want Mr. Cheney, or anyone else for that matter to die for crimes, but I want our country to stand up to leaders who say they represent us when really representing a small rich portion of our country to be brought before the world and kicked out of power. I don’t need, or want for that matter, a bloody coup - but rather for our representatives to stand up for what is right and wrong, not right and left, and impeach for fabricating lies that lead our country to war when the same congressional body (made of different members at the time) impeached a President over perjury and obstruction of justice relating to interpersonal crimes that although serious to those involved did not sentence hundreds of American soldiers to death and tens of thousands to injury.

This is not what our military is for and these men, Bush and Cheney, abused that. I just wish I could trust in the process and those acting out that process to do what I think is right and impeach both of them and have them removed from office.

Dinner Tonight

Creamed Corn with Bacon and Leeks with a slice of warm whole wheat baguette and a slice of blue brie (brie cheese with a vien of blue - oh so deliciouso). It was a small meal but I plan to use the creamed corn as a side dish to tomorrow’s curried bratwurst and I bet it’s even better the second day. I used Black Forrest Bacon from Whole Wallet Foods that was nice because I could buy the four slices needed instead of a whole darn packet and then end up looking for uses for a high fat meat product in my ever-healthier kitchen.

Later in the week I plan to make Vietnamese Shrimp Rolls and Pasta with Spinach, Beans and Asiago Cheese. It will be a delicious first week home in my own kitchen again.

Saturday Night

Sunday Scribblings…..found via Ingrid hosted at Sunday Sribblings.

This week’s prompt “I get that sinking feeling…”

I hug them goodbye one by one as the file down the hallway - a week’s worth of moments rushing through my mind. At moment’s I’ve loved and other’s I’ve felt as if I wanted to be alone. But now - facing alone - it’s all too real and that sinking feeling starts to creep up from the corners of the room.

I’ve known it before and faced it with more courage each time but it is not easy. That feeling that each neighbor could reach out and laugh - look me in the eye and know that I am here utterly alone. No one to talk to my mouth grows dry, I must remember to greet others. My first instinct is to hole up in this plastic version of paradise - in the semi-darkness of a hotel room. Here I can watch CNN and hear news of the world, sometimes event that outside my door.

Tomorrow I face my demons in a way I’ve avoided before. I still remember the stiff walls in Switzerland closing in, my nights alone in Amsterdam and the regret that follows. Where is that woman full of adventure? Is it she that when alone must fight to stay out of the dark cave of solitude? Over the years I’ve become more tolerant of her, understanding her motives and her roots. But this time, in a tropical paradise not unlike my own I will be brave and leave the cave behind.

The file out and I crawl into bed. The sheets hold me down so that I don’t run out over the warm tiles and the sounds of the road to find them and cling on riding their coattails all the way to Hawaii instead of my own home. I must wait almost twenty four hours before it is my time and as I lie in bed alone I wish my original plan to bring company of my own had happened. Who cares about the issues with those companions and how frustrating they would be - now I want them here so I can get rid of that sinking feeling.

Dawn awakens me gently but it takes effort to put up a wall against the fear. Shower. Dressed. Miss him and her. Deep Breath. Leave your room. Wish for company. Taxi. Farmers Market. Coffee Shop. Pool. Travel outside, alone with confidence and don’t let that sinking feeling creep in and pain the last days of travel green with fear…..don’t let it come in.

Taputapuatea Marai

The Marai at Taputapuatea

I went today to the Marai where the first Tahitian left to voyage and find Hawaii thousands of years ago. Upon arriving on Oahu he sent his son back and the family returned and populated Hawaii. It’s amazing what they did and in 1976 after almost 600 years the Polynesian Voyaging Society sent back the Hokuleia to that very same Marai. The thousands of Tahitians from all over Polynesia greeted them chanting “what took you so long?” The place had great mana (power) and I was truly touched by all that it means for the history of Hawaii and the people of Raiatea.
