The perfect first day

It may have not been the perfect first day home, but it came as close as humanly possible.

We arrived on time to Honolulu and met up with Tutu and Bumpa at the airport where Papaya pretended to be shy for about twenty minutes. Poor thing, he body was telling her it was two a.m. so it must have been hard to be nice to all these adults who are there to talk and hug and kiss and tickle you.

She woke up bright and early the next morning at three a.m. Hawaii time, luckily Mama is on East Coast time too so we survived it with little trouble . We ate our first breakfast and unpacked some in our new apartment. We read books and played games and I was so amazed at her ability for imagination.

Example: Opens plastic Easter Egg and tells me the chicken just hatched out of the egg. “We are hatching the eggs Mama.” Then goes on to tell me that one has flown up into the tree and she is going to get a ladder to save it. Once she mimics reaching up she cradles the imaginary chicken and moves on with her game of hatching eggs, lining up the shells and pretending to feed apples to the chickens. It may have happened on one of her cartoons once that a chicken got stuck in a tree (Diego? Wonder Pets?) but darn - she kept that theme going and had such fun with a few empty plastic eggs!

This reminds me one of my goals for living her - minimal if any TV. We are using the code-word “Syracuse” for it (S comes before T and U before V and “SU” is apparently what Syracuse is known for says Adventure Dad). She just zones on it when I put it on and would watch it all darn day. I want the kid to read and play instead, and for myself I want to be a more involved Mama.

When Tutu and Bumpa awoke we went to Cinnamon’s which has beautiful outdoor seating which helps when Papaya wants to do a little leg stretching while I’m eating my Mahi Mahi Benedict. Back at home Bumpa and I cleaned and organized the fridge while Papaya explored her new yard under Tutu’s supervision. The girl has a thing for dirt facials - in fact this lead to one of the two bath/showers we had to take this day!

After the bath and lunch Papaya napped while I got to go grocery shopping at Down to Earth with my new awesome grocery bags and stock up on yummy stuff. I did meal planning through Thursday when we will go to the Farmers Market and get inspiration by what is fresh and in season!

While Maya played I got to organize and unpack some new Bento Boxes, our new Laptop Lunchboxes. I’m going to work this week on putting together the closets/desks in our beautiful new apartment and on spending a lot of time in the front yard letting Papaya play in the great warm outdoors!

Post-nap my brother, his wife, my step brother, his wife and son all came over to spend some family time. We took the Keiki to the beach where Maya made sure to remind Uncle and I that we needed to jump at each wave so no water got into her mouth. Her favorite moments were sitting in the sand with measuring cups - a classic picture of simple and happy childhood. Post-beach we washed off the sand and ate a little dinner before she collapsed into sleep - at 7:30 p.m. which to her little body was 11:30 p.m.

I feel so full and happy about how this move is turning out. We miss Adventure Dad of course, but we get to talk on the phone right now and things here are as well as I could hope. The Papaya is loving her “new” bed which is actually my one from childhood (how cool is that?) and her family here. I am looking forward to a week of appointments, reunions with friends and sitting in my front yard in paradise watching my daughter play happily with a rake and a hula hoop.

Moving is not fun

It gets “better” each time these military moves happen to us, but it is never easy to pack up your life and start over.  We are so very lucky this time to be moving back to my home - so the “back end” of the move will be a lot easier.  Unfortunately, it does not make the “front end” here any better.

Things are busy - Papaya Mom is going to be lacking for a few more weeks - but I promise to be back in awesome full force soon.

also: I got an iPhone and I’m in iLove.

Works for Me Wednesday

Feverish Girl

Papaya was sick and had a fever - she needed to sit in a bath to get it down but the tantrum she was throwing to avoid it was getting her hot and bothered which was against the point! We dumped out one of her plastic toy chests (in a corner), rinsed it out and added about 2 inches cold tap water and gave her cups/ice cubes/straws to play with. We sat right there and watched her - just as if she were in a bathtub - but the girl just happily splashed around (we covered the immediate area in towels) while watching TV (Wow Wow Wubsy on PBS Sprout). She was convinced she’d got to break a few rules - having a bath in the living room - and we got the feeling of doing something for that fever while we waited for the Tylenol to kick in.

Getting busy

Around Chez Papaya things are a moving!  In less than two weeks the Papaya and I are moving in one direction, Adventure Dad will be supervising the pack out after we leave and selling on car, then he has to turn over his job to a new guy and travel up North for a few weeks.  He’ll then have to store the Jeep at his parent’s farm and travel overseas.  We won’t see him until Christmas - and only for two weeks.  After that we have almost six months before he’ll live with us again.

We are incredibly busy trying to box up and mail all the important things to Hawaii for access in the coming year.  I’m sure we’ll forget something.  We will live, I know it. We’ve been through this enough to take time to be nice to one another and not snap it’s still never easy.

and The Paper Bag Princess which is a book I remember quite fondly from my own childhood.

The Papaya starts at her new Montessori Preschool on October 1 and I’m so very excited for her.  She’s a social little girl who loves group dynamics so far and I expect her to thrive.  I’ll need these books to keep her Mama time as interesting as her school time - I don’t want to be “one up’ed” by her school!

Against the dreaded stomach flu Papaya Mom and Adventure Dad fought.  We won but not before giving a large amount of our energy, pride and less-than-stellar parenting away.  I swear, Papaya watched WAY too much TV this weekend.

Fitness Friday

Welcome to this little weekly moment where I want to share with you my love for fitness - for myself, my child and my husband not to mention my extended family and friends. There are a great many levels out there and no matter what advertising tells us there is not a “good” or “bad” level. Doing what is a challenge to you is what is important, being ever growing in your repertoire of movement and healthy habits.

Note: Starting next week this will be a blog carnival where you can enter your own posts as well. To submit to the carnival click here.

This week? Lets talk about our kids. It’s suggested that children don’t begin weight lifting until around age 8 - although the myth that it would stunt their growth has been disproved (this is of course as long as they don’t start power lifting of course). I’m going to start this week with the age group closest to my heart…2-3 years old of course (we won’t leave out the Mommy group, don’t worry)!

National Association of Sports and Physical Education suggests 30 minutes of structured play (as in YOU come up with the ideas), and 60 minutes of unstructured (FREE wild child) play every day. Let’s talk about how to do it in a way that can help keep Mommy fit too! That free play in our house ends up with Papaya leading family walks around our neighborhood to the all-important mailbox, to check on the swing set and so on (until midnight if we’d let her stay out - that girl loves the outdoors!)

Under the Bridge

Stand in front of a park bench or the back of your (stable) sofa and lean forward into a push-up position with your legs back, shoulders over your hands, hands on the bench or couch back and core tight (don’t forget to engage those glutes too!). Perform your push ups and encourage your child to run under the bridge for each one - and count for you! Keep your neck straight and not arched back or down - if you were standing straight up you’d be looking straight ahead, keep that in mind. We usually don’t make it to an even or easy number before the Papaya looses interest, but a few here and there throughout your park day do Mommy’s body good!

Frog Hop

Kids love animals and therefore we parents have learned the sounds, nesting habits, etc. of every bug, beetle or mammal our child finds interesting. This is a great chance to use our children’s imaginations to move around both of our bodies. A few common are - “hop like a frog” where you do just that or if you don’t want to dip that low you can do a modified squat jump. Feet shoulder width apart, core and glutes engaged (that means tighten those muscles and hold yourself steady), and hands up squat down while keeping our heads in line with the back (so don’t arch the neck back by always looking straight but don’t arch it down by dropping the neck to look straight down either). Squat as if you are going to sit in a chair then push back up into a small jump pushing off from the heels (first) to toes (right before takeoff). Land squarely and hop again at will. The Papaya loves to do this and her tiny little flexible muscles squat her down with butt touching the heels - I sure don’t have the ability to copy her there! (Don’t forget to ribbit!)

Bug Dips

Using that bench or couch again we’ve got an exercise that will firm up your triceps and make your toddler giggle. Line up in a sitting position on your bench and place your hands on the edge of the bench, palms facing in. Legs out from the body ahead of you and engage your abs and glutes, then scoot off the bench so your butt is hanging right in front of the edge and use your arms to lever you up and down. Keep your elbows in one place and lever those muscles! Each time…on the down….let out a hoot and claim to have sat on a (insert bug here) and have your toddler swipe it away (pretend) on the up swing which for the good of your toddler and muscles will be a bit longer than an in-gym set.

Lunge and Push

If your child resembles the Papaya then you spend lots of time on your arms - pushing a swing that is. I like to stand back as far as possible and assume the lunging position and push, static (in one place) lunge, push, static lunge, push….etc. and then switch legs when I can’t take it on that first leg anymore. “To perform the lunge, the individual stands with their feet shoulder-width apart, and then steps forward, landing with the heel first. The motion is continued until the back knee is nearly touching the ground. Then they return to their starting position by driving upward forward with the front leg, and repeat the exercise by stepping forward with their other leg.” (description of Lunge from Wikipedia) Make sure to push the swing with your arms and not your body, keep your core engaged and firm!

The great thing about keeping ourselves in shape and keeping our toddlers moving - copycats! These wonderful little ones want to do what Mommy does so when you show them that you enjoy fitness, they will too. Papaya pretends to do lunges across a room (walking with her knees bent - it’s not a lunge but it’s so darn cute) and practices counting - two birds with one stone! We don’t need to lead them into biceps curls and triceps dips to give them little muscles, rather it’s best to let them follow along on activities that are more specific if they like and spend most of our time guiding them to move in any way they find fun. “Can you……waddle like a penguin? Ooh! What a fast penguin you are!” These moments are fun and rewarding for both Mother and toddler and I’m glad they are part of my parenting repertory.

Um, uh, please stop?

Maybe it’s that Papaya woke up last night crying and proceeded to spend a few hours throwing up every twenty minutes or so, but today I’m a bit cranky. She is better and eating again, even napping, but I’m very annoyed at my mid-day NPR experience. I’m obviously addicted to blogging because I started to think about how to blog this as I drove home listening to the story…

Our local NPR Station is for the most part, great. I even got used to the Diane Rehm Show which freaked us out at first because of her spasmodic dysphonia which makes her sound a whole lot older than she really is. So…today I’m driving post-lunch-date with my toddler and the show is on and it’s about something I love; Books!

Guest host Steve Roberts is talking to John Heath (award-winning teacher, scholar, lecturer, and co-author of “Who Killed Homer?) and Lisa Adams (a recipient of the Woodall Essay Prize and the McCann Short Fiction Award). A woman calls in to talk about Harry Potter and how she’s glad to, um, hear that, um, the book will, uh, be taught in classrooms, um, in, um, 10 to 15 years for sure! Okay, I get that the caller is nervous about being on the radio and it happens. In the next five minutes I noticed more um, uh, um out of these WRITERS who are on the radio and even the host than I cared to count. Mr. Heath and Ms. Adams were a great improvement from the female caller but I was so sad to hear intelligent commentary punctuated by uh.

Why was I so annoyed? Because I love listening to NPR and I tell myself that hearing intelligent conversation from adults other than her parents (we mostly grunt at one another) is good for Papaya. Now, with Diane off on some vacation my poor toddler is reduced to learning that instead of a moment of silence (perfectly acceptable in conversation) adults say uh, um, uh a lot.

Dear God help WAMU if my toddler wakes up from this nap and starts punctuating her sentences with uh and um.

The Nonsense Story meme…

1. Copy and paste the story below, and the rules, on your blog.
2. Find out who you’re going to tag. (2-3 people, or more, if you wish)
3. Write one or two sentences to continue the story, and use the titles of the blogs you’re tagging or any word(s) associated with them as keywords in the links you include in your part of the story.
4. Remember to tell your taggees that you’ve tagged them!
5. Feel free to use this and start your own viral link story. I’d very much appreciate a link back to Mother’s Home! if you do. (Or a tag, if you prefer!)

The story is below. The last paragraph is mine and it has links to the 9 friends I have chosen. If you got tagged, feel free to do the meme or not. It could be fun, if you decide to continue the nonsense story.

Here’s the beginning:
Mother’s Home! the cave troll yelled. I have been out all day strangling chickens like CRAZY! for the evil Empress. All i want now is a MOment to myself, but i keep getting Linda talking Drivel, but that is better than a certain someone Mooing. Then suddenly what should appear but the NOT evil Empress and all her strangled chickens and Mags cooked them all up and made us a lovely cake to eat. Gracie wanted all the cake for herself but the NOT evil Empress was able to hack off a good sized slab for herself!!! Ha ha ha, Gracie belched loudly after eating all the scrumptious cake that Mags had baked and watched Callie scrappin’ with Sarge about who was gonna win Big Brother 8. Sarge started humming “Dixie,” and almost choked on the bite of cake in his mouth! So he got some coffee to go to wash down the cake. The coffee helped a bit but he had to vocalize before he started singing again so he began, “Mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi…”

…who heard him all the way from Bloggingham Palace and said, “Where is that awful noise coming from? Is there a sick wailing Wacky Mom loose in the woods?” She said, “I’ll bet Songbird can teach him to sing!” but she was busy BONDing in the desert with Kathleen who sat writing heresy in her diary. She was absolutely no help. So Mi-Mi asked Kat to put him on the PP&P list to save his sorry soul. Alas, Ralph the Airhead made a new batch but the Patti-cakes fell in Polliwog’s Pond and nobody got to eat cake after all! It was all Bee’s fault (somehow). Feeling sorry for herself, she pranced over to Odat’s for a dance but she only heard strange mumbling…

That mumbling, however, resulted from The Alien Next Door trying to clone Justin Stanely’s Weblog. The meticulous and risky cloning occurred throughout several millennia, past, present, and future. Or so it seemed; no one could keep count. It was just too much. The mind-numbing years had finally sublimed the earth into a pristine Bobbarama. All well and good, said Bob, but whatever happened to the rules? Before anyone got hurt, however, enough stars fell and crashed to alert Sci-Fi Girl, who grabbed her laptop and returned to the woods, where Mimi’s Dating Profile popped up, allowing a lion to lie happily next to a lamb…

Now, the insane writer burst into the forest, kissing the dogwood and sat on the lion, spinning tales about sci-fi girl’s boyfriend, sci-fi guy, who had his eye on [her] DNA, which he was hoping to sell for anything goes. But just then the mad goat lady and the drowsey monkey pranced into the forest and sang a truly quiet symphony, which annoyed the insane writer.

“What’s that funky sound?” screamed sci-fi guy.

“Well, it sure isn’t a raspberry-latte!” grumbled the insane writer. “Get a grip, sci-fi guy! You’re my main character! I expect you to know how to split an atom! Ignore that woman and her indolent pet! Now, go and do your dastardly thing!”

Kissing the dogwood had been a lure, a trap set by the Mighty Morgan to take control of the BlogWood. Those petulant witches disguised as writers must be eradicated, them and their man slaves. She stuck her talons into the lion with A Twist and a Skewer till it rolled over and laughingly pleaded to go back to Neverland where it had been extremely happy. Her faithful followers, the Gargons grouped around her skirt folds, drooling and kissing her hem in adoration. “Here, take this poison” she commanded, “why? (asked) paisley“, the only rebel in the camp. “To blight their computers my little friends, it’s a special potion A Bit of This and a Dash of the Other“…she smiled mysteriously in her best Mae West accent and set off in search of the Englebert Humperdink Fan Club.

Well they searched all over boricua in texas….till they found just write road… aha this was the place… if they could just get in the front row,, surely that was the place that screamed “flash your knickers here“… and oh yes… they would… in doing so they could only hope to distract the masses long enough for the twisted sisters to sneak in with the special potion they had cooked up………

But the potion did not work. They were missing the secret ingredient… Papaya!!! There was no use hiding in public. Off they went in search of an abyss to gaze into, for they had heard the place was haunted and they could find Pyreflies there. Picking up pieces of somebody else’s memories was a habit they enjoyed very much. Live and love!

The new memories straight from the mouths of babes were the ideal target - they were so much fun. The Gargons started to get dizzy as they gazed through the looking glass in search of the right abyss that would be full of little nurslings. Suddenly the world began to spin and they fell down, the only sound was the sorta crunchy fall leaves crunching below their backs, and if no one was there to hear it - did the sound even exist? If these Gargons had any hope of surviving they would have to pull away from the peaceful nap that the spell was laying around their tiny little minds and run for their lives to Cafe ala Mode where the Fairytale Godmother kept her super secret brew hidden behind pots in the dark deep industrial kitchen (next to the MSG). It was their only chance to break the spell that held them in her control.
