Toy Review

As a gift to my other Mother friends; a review of the toys I brought:

Finding Nemo Crazy Eights Game Cards - Fun for counting fish, talking about sharks and folding/ripping. 45 minutes.

I Spy Memory Cards Game - Awesome for handing back and forth and pointing out something else we know the word for. 2 hours

Magnetic Folder with Dress Up Dolls and Clothing (even if it was Barbie brand I’d never admit it): 30 minutes tops, then only fun for ripping apart the thin magnetic pants and laughing at the oh-to-thin magnetic model before ripping her in half too. 20 minutes.

Puzzle Pieces - Fun for pointing out body parts (the sets were of a body part picture and the name) and then finding them on ourselves. Probably did not need a whole gallon bag of these, 20 would have done just fine. 1 hour

iPod with 7 Disney Movies - Great, if your kid will wear the earphones. It was fun to watch without sound, but not for too long. 1 hour

Peg and Post sticks - fun for making a really long chain of sticks to use to poke at people in front of and behind you in the isle. This toy may have had more shelf life, but not if I wanted my neighbors not to kill my kid. 30 minutes

Lego-type blocks - These are a little different but hard to describe, lots of webbed sticks that interlock with each other? I’ll have to get a picture. Anyway, did not need a whole gallon bag since three of these lasted a good 90 minutes.

Stickers - Lets see how many we can stick on a hand, a foot, a leg? A great time, but I need to bring more variety in sticker size because a whole roll of (Target Dollar Area bought) Mickey Mouse stickers is not *that* interesting. 45 minutes

You may note that these times do NOT fill up an hour. Oh no, not the entire tinkerbell backpack of snacks (Yogos, Breakfast Bites, Cheese Sticks) were good enough for the incredibly long journey.

Other:

Hot towel - We played with this fun one for a good 30 minutes in tug-of-war, jump rope, etc. 30 minutes and free!

Barf Bag - clean, of course. You can stick both feet in it like a shoe or put it on your hand as a puppet and what fun is that!?!?! 30 minutes

Peekaboo - I send many good wishes to every person who was willing to spend five minutes allowing my child to play peek a boo. It adds up, and that is what matters.

It’s like childbirth.

The moment it is over you start to forget the pain.

We awoke this morning at 5 a.m. EST, went first to the wrong aiport (National) then to the right one (Dulles) where we flew to Atlanta and then on to Hawaii. The first flight was two hours, Papaya was a dream and charmed everyone. Even though I was on Delta (the lactivist in me was angry at myself but I bought the tickets before the most recent scandal) we still managed to land at B terminal and transfer to E terminal in 45 minutes, um, thanks for nothing.

We boarded our second flight to find that it was an OLD plane, the first class had two window, two middle, and two window. Great, so our C/D seats were in the middle of the isle. You may wonder what is wrong with this, if you do, than you do not have a toddler. Every f^%T*&*& toy on the ground, thrown in a direction I could not reach. So…we taxi out and spend an hour on the runway and then 9 1/2 in flight time. Needless to say, Papaya was a dream and difficult for me all at the same time. Her feet touched the seat in front of her which bothers her OCD (inherited) so she kicked the man in front of her the whole flight, he complained once but when realizing that I would try to stop but not abuse my child over the light kicking of a seat pocket, he gave up.

I often end up in situations like this and something is done or said to annoy me. In the moment, I put up with it and move on. Then I steam for days and weeks with wonderful witty retorts dancing in my head like sugar plum faries. So, I sat ther enad came up with a bunch just in case. My luck, the guy never said another word and complimented Papaya as we left the plane at the end of the flight. I guess I’m just not meant to be witty.

The last two hours were the toughest, Papaya screamed for “down” and I did not blame her. Only chasing her up and down isles is tough and only half the people are impressed with a toddler running past them again and again and saying “hi” or something else equally cute like “vagina” (no, she didn’t, but she could have and then what would I have done?). We westled and climbed and ate ice cream and did everyhing in our power including Finding Nemo Flashcards to get through those last moments.

We arrived at 4:15 p.m. PST and Papaya was very excited to get off the plane. I practically threw her at her Tutu and went to get our baggage. On the drive home she fell asleep and took a three hour nap which allowed me to unpack, shower, change and pick up some Korean BBQ to share with the family for dinner. Oh it was tasty and the leftovers will be tomorrow too!

In her bath Papaya played happily and sang songs. My Mom and I sat there talking and laughing at her fart bubbles. Note: this is where a good parent would have taken the action of sitting her toddler on the potty. Instead, I did not think of that and let her sit there. Serious floaters. Big ones, like drain the tub and wash it out floaters, like fish them out and flush them floaters because they are almost adult size. I guess that is what happens when you finally get out of your prison (carseat) after 10+ hours and have warm water relaxing your tummy.

So it’s like childbirth, it is over and I’m *starting* to forget the pain. I did however offer Adventure Dad the option of coming out here and picking up his daughter and taking her home all by himself, only this was my idea and not his, so as much as I’d like someone else to be guilty, it’s just me.

Three words

This just in, Papaya Papaya Princess of Everything was cuddling with her Mommy this morning. She took her Mother’s cheeks in each of her tiny soft hands, looked straight at her face and said….”I love you.” I can die now, my life is complete. We said it about a billion more times and laughed and hugged and I’m sure made her feel like a circus elephant asked to perform a few extra times.

My girl likes to POTTY ALL THE TIME

Running around naked after her bath she was in prime happy Papaya moment. She came to stand next to me, leaned her little warm body against mine and slightly lifted her outer leg. What next you wonder? A tiny trickle of pee onto the carpet.

I think her current diaper rash may cause her to want to go not on the potty or in her diaper but, damn, I only have four rooms in the whole house with carpet and she chose one of them to do this in. Ah, sweet childhood.

She flusters me

“I see you” she sings as she looks at me through the window, excitement bubbling. We’ve just spent almost an hour playing in the shower, one of our favorite pastimes. Both of us, five shower heads streaming down at different angles and a few cups - paradise. One shower head hit high above us against the glass creating a water wall to play with, others mini showers and places to fill our cups with water.

We washed a bit, but mostly we learned about water and ourselves. “Elbow” she says, then “Elbow in water” as she dunks it into her plastic coffee cup, finding it quicly stuck. “Stuck!” she exclaimes and lets it loose without knowing what she’s done.

“Knee”, she says pointing to her thigh. “No sweetie, that’s your thigh, thigh, knee, thigh, knee” I whisper back to her. “Thighknee” she says running her hand from her thigh to her knee, well, at least its a start.

For the first time in many of our games of NAME THAT PART she wanted to know about our special parts. Um, I really did think I had a few more years before the birds and the bees. “Vagina”, “Boobie” and “Nipple” are our new words, oh how fun it will be to see where those words come up. I can’t wait until she points at Daddy some day and says “Vagina” and he has to explain that he has something oh so very different.

Now she’s rocking her puzzles and I’m blogging - oh what a nice afternoon (apart from my pounding sinus headache and need to sleep).

I’m a lucky Mom

At this hour, I’m lucky, because I rarely see the sunrise unless I choose to. My sweet baby/toddler sleeps until at least 7:30 a.m. and often a full hour longer than that.

But today, for the bazillionth time in the last few months, I’m sick again. Same symptoms; sore throat/cough/runny nose. And I’m up because I took a 4-6 hour medication last night around 11 and it had run out. So here I sit waiting for my Claratin to kick in and blogging to the world about how at this hour, I am usually in bed cuddling my little baby instead of sitting upright trying not to cough too much.

So off to the store when Papaya wakes up, for some of that Zicam stuff I saw on TV. I’ve got a plane to catch in two days and I’d like my ears to not burst from the pressure you see.

I’m beta baby

I’ve upgraded to beta baby, I know your jealous so I’ll leave it at that.

I’m home and somehow managed to get a little runny nose/sneeze thing from where I don’t know. Maybe that nice man behind us in line at Burger King? I mean I spent most of my goddamn time IN THE CAR, so I expect to be at least a bit protected from common folk.

Luckily, Papaya is well and showing no runny nose issues. Thank goodness as she and I have a big day ahead of us this week.

14 hours of travel to go and see Tutu and Bumpa! We’ve got a backpack full of never-before-seen toys, 7 movies on the iPod and at last resort, snacks galore and my prayers that we survive. Oh, God of all babies, please bless me with a day of calm Papaya who is happy to sit in her carseat on a plane she does not know is moving and play with things, please let her sleep soundly, a lot and let me get to Hawaii without loosing my mind. And while you are at it, could you please make the same true when we come home? Thanks.
