Broken and Hot

So the sprained shoulder?  Turns out it is a broken collarbone.

Her busy little immune system?  So busy fixing broken bone it forgot to fight off the cold going around preschool - yep 102 degree fever.

Fun times at Chez Papaya.

Nightime Woes

After her first friend sleepover (luckily with other children’s parent in the home as well) Papaya ended up quite uncomfortable. Why you ask? She fell out of bed.

Now, we’ll not go into the fact that in her short lifetime this has happened a few times because it really is normal I think. The thing is - this night it was all bad luck. The bottom half of her body hit the friend’s mattress on the floor so her entire body weight hit the ground (tile in her new bedroom, damn design flaw) on her right shoulder. Before when she’d fallen out of bed I’d pick her up, cuddle her and she’d fall back asleep in minutes. Not this time - she was still wincing in pain thirty minutes later and telling me her shoulder hurt.

We loaded up and drove to the ER. She was more worried that they might notice the splinter in her hand and try to take it out (bad last visit to her Pediatrition with a handful of splinters from Tutu and Bumpa’s gate) then her shoulder. A few X-Rays later she had a new sling, a bit of motrin in her and advice to rest her sprained shoulder and ligament. To my single girlfriends - there is one HOT ER Doctor on the overnight shift at Castle, in case of course you are in need of services provided. Papaya invited him home for cupcakes but alas I’m very happily married, so the poor guy had to go without, cupcakes.

At first she could not raise her arm or rotate it above 8 o’clock. Forty eight hours later she has almost full range of motion back without any medication and we only occasionally bump it in a way that hurts. She’s even going back to school tomorrow after a week long vacation - she is VERY excited to see her play friends again.

Me? I’ll just get back to unpacking…..so goes the life of a military wife. I’ll also pray that Papaya’s bad luck streak ends - in the time Adventure Dad has been out to sea she has stepped on a tack (in our yard?), had the shoulder injury, and then was in our new hammock chair when the O ring in the tree fell and she/her friends all crumpled down. I am SO ready for another parent and a wind of good luck to come back to our town!

Weekend Warriors

Against the dreaded stomach flu Papaya Mom and Adventure Dad fought.  We won but not before giving a large amount of our energy, pride and less-than-stellar parenting away.  I swear, Papaya watched WAY too much TV this weekend.

I’ll be back full force this week :)

Nestle Boycott Week

First…they marketed formula in third world countries with salespeople dressed as nurses (breaking the IBFAN), then they worked towards convincing women that they need expensive (Nestle manufactured) suppliments to breastfeed, bribed Doctors in Pakistan, been a thorn in UNICEF’s side regarding breastfeeding regulations in third world counries, and more recently they have promoted chocolate as an aid to intelligence in Russian schools (don’t we wish that were true!).

Do not even get me started on it’s token Fair Trade Coffee that is only one of over 3000 products, or the UK ruling (1999) that noted it could not support a claim that it markets infant formula “ethically and responsibly”…because it does NOT.

Well my friends … feel free to avoid Nescafe and all other Nestle Products this week for the boycott - July 2 through 9th!

To Gwen Steffani who babywears as does her husband, although I’m dying to spread the shoulder part of it for her and show her how much more comfortable that ring sling can be.

To celebrities who don’t hide it when they cosleep like other parents around the world - it is NOT dangerous unless you are on drugs or severely overweight so why do people act like it’s shocking?

Potty Power!

I know, you are as excited as I am.

This weekend we bought Papaya’s favorite new video “Potty Power” and a book or two about how it all works. She had begun to not enjoy the feeling of a dirty diaper so we thought we might give it a try. All day Monday we watched the video, sat on the potty, sang songs and we got a BIG FAT nothing. Well, unless “nothing” is defined by pee in the plastic training panties.

So today, Papaya came home from our evening errands and was standing next to her potty chair trying to rip off her diaper. I helped, she sat, NOTHING. No biggie - we were sure that aside from allowing her 10000 times a day request for watching “Potty Power” (I can hear Adventure Dad upstairs right now whistling the tune of the song) we would not push it. We wanted her to take the lead when she was ready.

I was on the phone with a girlfriend and she sat on the potty as she’d done on and off for the last hour (naked bottom - danger but important). Then she stood up - and what before my eyes did appear? A tablespoon of yellow liquid, from my daughter!

I cheered, we took the pee to the toilet, she flushed, we wiped and washed and went back to our happy day. Then, over the course of the next three hours she peed on the potty five more times, and had one little poop. Her father and I have been praising her all night - and she even got a cold Andes Mint out of the fridge as a “poopie prize.”

I know this is a LONG journey and success is not going to happen overnight but I’m so happy that she seems ready for the journey. She’s leading US, and peeing when she wants to. She can have a diaper whenever she likes (although she’s refused them all night) and have naked-butt-potty-time as well (well, not out of the house for right now).

I’m so happy, I could buy a steam cleaner in celebration….or is that preparation?

What it’s like…

to be bipolar.

Sometimes I wonder if “normal” people know. I’m not depressed, or just down….sometimes I’m up and sometimes I’m down but not in a way I’ve seen in others without my particular chemical imbalance. When I’m “up” I’m not happy in the smiling kind of a way - rather I can’t stop thinking enough to sleep, I stay awake until dawn organizing anything from Papaya’s entire education to what I’ll eat over the next 2, 12, 24, 36 hours. I can’t stop moving, and I can’t stop thinking even when I’m tired and my body aches for rest. Down is easier to understand for most - but for me it’s paralyzing in strange ways. I can’t complete tasks such as making an appointment while able to function at others, no rhyme or reason as to what gets dropped. I have a hard time taking care of myself and begin to sleep at odd hours, more problematic is the increase in fast food. I start to eat - entire meals from McDonalds with diet coke (like the diet is going to DO something) but not until the dark lonely hours of the night. I watch TV until long after the commercials come on at 3 a.m. I pick arguments with my husband, that in the moment I feel are valid, but minutes later understand make no sense.

So yeah, it sucks. I gain weight, loose muscle tone and endanger the happiness of my marriage. I yell, and it scares my child. That breaks my heart more than anything. Because before I was a parent - I was going to be the best parent that ever lived, and when I’m in my bipolar life I barely scrape by. She is worth everything to me, worth more than me and anything else in the world.

So…yeah, I’m crawling out of this one with more motivation than ever. Turns out my medication via the Dr. in WA State were actually not made for bipolar but rather OCD (which I may have, but I damn well like) and was making me worse. So now I’m starting a new medication - a “mood stabilizer” that will take a few months to be fully effective. I’m hoping it will be better sooner than later.

Workout!

The new Season of Workout is on tonight!!!! I’m LOVING it. I love itso much. I want to go to Sky Sport & Spa and Skylab. I want to work out with Jackie Warner.

And I really wanted to work out today - it’s my BIG two hour day. Then my trainer had to reschedule. Then I got food poisoning and spent the night puking and today weak and sad. Julie helped me with Papaya, Adventure Dad left late and came home early.

Tomorrow is a playdate (Obama - Iraq policy) and I swear I want to be so much better so I can work out again. I miss it.
